Kate: Yeah, as a species we are massively destructive. Undoubtedly and inevitably we will be our own downfall - and perhaps in the not too distant future...
I once saw a game warden on Animal Planet lament the fact that God created humans. Some of the warden's neighbors had killed hippopotamus thatthe warden was fond of in order to save money for buiding a fence. This was in South Africa. His words: "Biggest mistake God ever made was in making humans." I thought to myself---"Maybe he didn't. He made YOU, too, after all." The point is---Just because a good portion of mankind is irresponsible, cruel and destructive does not mean ALL of humanity is like that. People are selfish, deluded and WAY too materialistic for them to coexist with the rest of Nature; that's why they could end up going extinct, too. As long as humanity remains indifferent and self-obsessed and not seek balance within themselves and with the world around them, this will continue. That's why the rest of humanity must struggle to get humans to get over their indifference and greed. I'm not condoning what these people did---I'm just not willing to dismiss and "give up" on my race. We must get over fear, desire and ignorance. Will be extremely hard, though. I'm willing to give it a try for my race. :)
I respect your opinion. But I have to disagree with you. Everytime you look around you see how the people on this planet are screwing up everything we touch. The fact that not all of us are bad in no way negates the fact that our species is toxic. I agree with the warden of your story, humans suck. Realizing we are more problem than answers in no way redeems us.
If you want to have patience with our race that is your prerogative. I can't support it though.
I hate my own kind sometimes. I think the world would be a better place without humans:(
