CFZ Director Jon Downes makes the pages of Britain's Telegraph newspaper today, where he discusses the Loch
Ness Monster and Bigfoot. Jon also mentions something that he told me about recently, but asked me not to say too much until he was ready to make an announcement. Well, now he has made the announcement: in the newspaper. The news is that very soon, Richard Freeman (
CFZ Zoological-Director) and several colleagues will be traveling to Russia to search for hairy wild-men. This is likely to be one of the
CFZ's most ambitious projects to date, and when I know more, I'll let you know.
'Twas good that Jon was interviewed and got some positive press for the CFZ, but I had major issues with that article. First, it showed that same damned "Surgeon's photo of Nessie" that was established to be a fake like 15 years ago, and a highly suspect photo of Bigfoot/Sasquatch. It also stated that the ivory-billed woodpecker was rediscovered in Canada (Canada?! try Arkansas, USA). The entertaining Jon Downes' quotes aside, this article was all too representative of the popular media's disdain for cryptozoology.

ReplyDeleteYeah, it's actually kind of shocking how often the media gets the facts wrong - on everything!
I think the reason the Loch Ness 'Surgeon' photo was used because Jon and Richard did a talk in London which I attended on Tues' 20th May, in which they discussed the basics of cryptozoology, and used images such as that mentioned to show that crypto isn't always about fakes.
ReplyDeleteThey announced at the talk the plans for Russia, and it was great to see the guys and hand over to Richard a bag of crypto dvd's although I'm sure it looked far dodgier than that!

ReplyDeleteVery cool - wish I could have been there!
